Surge Protection Advice

THREE STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR HOME EQUIPMENT (TVs, CPUs, etc.)

With the new NEC Electrical Code coming out and being implemented, one of the revisions in it, has to do with surge protectors. Surge protection is an important element for your home electrical usage. Simply, because it protects sensitive expensive equipment and devices, such as tvs, computers, motherboards, ref. motherboards, radios, etc., from voltage, hertz, and apere fluctuations.

There are four types of surge protectors altogether (SPDs).

Type I: Surge protection between power company power and your main panel.

Type II: Surge protection between your main service disconnect and your entire household load.

Type III: Surge protection between your outlet and equipment.

Type IV: Surge protection within your equipment.

Generally, you have control of 3 out of the 4, namely, II-IV. It is wise to implement all of these in your control, precisely because it provides a better absorbing buffer between the equipment and electrical surging, as well as lightning storms. Though you may have a surge protecting device (SPD) between the main service disconnect and the household load, your home may be struck by lightning! Thus, bybass that supressing device and fry all your sensitive electronic devices, as I have seen happen.

1) Thus, you should buy surge protecter outlets and extension cords for your tvs, and cpus, etc. You can buy these at Walmart, or Best Buy. This satisfies Type III.

2) You should buy devices, tvs, radios, etc., with built in SPDs–Type IV.

3) Finally, you should have an electrician install an SPD for your main panel.
If you do these three steps you will make a smart investment by taking steps to protecting your home electrical appliances and equipment.
